A society in which every young woman and girl has her Right of Way. At IYWD every young woman and girl’s voice is vital. She needs to be recognised as a full and equal citizen, she needs to speak out, to be heard, to be herself and respected as such. She has a Right of Way, and society needs to Give Her Way. This is the world we are working to create, and this is the legacy we leaving for all the young women and girls, from all geographical orientations.

The IYWD is committed to mobilising and strengthening the voice and power of young women in marginalised communities to transform the status quo; through various programmes that engage communities, institutions and the young women themselves do that issues that marginalise and oppress them are eliminated.
Commitments that express who we are as a young feminist organisation and what principles or qualities will infuse all practices and activities within the organisation.
- Outrage and love
Our work is built on the wings of outrage and love. Outrage because of the injustices that we experience and love because it gives us the momentum to fly and spread our wings, soar, follow our dreams, dare, support and encourage one another.
- “Thinking otherwise”
At IYWD we have a clear political agenda. We seek change that privileges young women’s interests and that transforms both gender and social power relations. We think otherwise in the sense that we have and will continue to challenge whatever oppresses us in the name of culture, religion, age, identity, geographical orientation, class and other oppressive variables. We challenge rigid gender roles within the family and community. We encourage communities to unlearn bad patriarchal habits and re-learn social justice and fairness.
We are clear and courageous about our stance. We are true to ourselves and who we are. It’s our authenticity that enables a vigorous and creative engagement with our constituency and hence our ability to challenge, share, support, politicize and influence. We listen to our constituency and are guided by them and that is the trademark of our feminist approach to development. We don’t impose solutions. We say “No” firmly and collegially to agendas that might want to derail our political vision while continuing to educate them about the work that we do.
Building solidarity is linked to our work on consciousness-raising. We will continue to work with different institutions, (family, faith based, government, schools etc) across movements locally, nationally and continentally as well as internationally both south-north and south-south. We will do this in ways that will enable us to be an integral part of the struggles for justice of cross movements as well as seeking their support and solidarity for our issues, demands, claims and struggles.
- Risk Taking
Moving towards the unknown, we will take risks.
We recognize that communities are their own change-agents, and believe that solutions to the broader issues of the day should be informed and driven by their own shared and unique experiences. We feel it is important that the people who are most affected are at the table at all times.
- Diversity, equality, justice and partnership
We will ensure that the IYWD family has a diverse group of young women and that we are guided by the values of diversity, equality, justice and partnerships. We don’t discriminate against any young woman.
Inside IYWD we’ll remain energized, vibrant and creative. We will always reinvent, and rethink our creativity; learning and leading from the inside, not just responding to the outside.
- Learning and Reflection
We incorporate a spirit of exploration and fun with an integration of the wisdom gained from our multiple sources of intelligence and passion.
